When it comes to creating a safe environment in our homes, electrical safety is a crucial aspect that should never be overlooked. From preventing accidents to avoiding potential fire hazards, taking steps to ensure electrical safety is essential for the well-being of our families. In this blog post, I will share some valuable tips and information to help you create a safe and secure electrical system in your home. First and foremost, it is important to have a basic understanding of your home's electrical system. While it may seem complex, familiarizing yourself with the main components will go a long way in ensuring safety. The main power source for your home is the electrical panel, which contains circuit breakers or fuses. These devices are designed to protect your home from electrical overloads and short circuits. Regular maintenance and inspections of your electrical system are vital to identify any potential issues before they become major problems. If you notice flickering lights, outlets that are warm to the touch, or circuit breakers that frequently trip, it is crucial to address these issues promptly. Hiring a certified electrician to inspect your electrical system at regular intervals is highly recommended. Another important aspect of electrical safety is the proper use of electrical outlets. Overloading outlets with too many devices or using extension cords as a permanent solution can lead to overheating and potential fire hazards. It is important to distribute the load evenly among different outlets and use power strips with built-in surge protectors for additional safety. Childproofing electrical outlets is also essential, especially if you have young children in your home. Outlet covers or tamper-resistant outlets can prevent accidental electrocution or children inserting foreign objects into the outlets. Additionally, keeping electrical cords out of reach or using cord organizers can help minimize the risk of tripping or pulling on cords. When it comes to electrical safety, it is crucial to prioritize the use of high-quality electrical products. Investing in properly certified electrical devices ensures that they meet strict safety standards. Whether it's light fixtures, appliances, or power tools, always opt for reputable brands known for their commitment to safety. Lastly, educating your family members about electrical safety is of utmost importance. Teach them about the dangers of playing with electrical outlets, pulling cords, or attempting DIY electrical repairs. Encourage everyone to report any electrical issues or abnormalities immediately. By following these electrical safety tips, you can create a secure environment for you and your loved ones. Remember, electrical safety is everyone's responsibility, and a proactive approach can prevent accidents and potential hazards in your home. Stay safe, stay informed, and prioritize electrical safety in your daily life! Recessed quartz halogen lighting is a hazard. It was very popular before the advent of low wattage low heat LED lamps. In order to reduce electricity usage many homeowners are replacing these older lights with LED lighting. Very often we find that there has been a build up of leaves and other combustible materials hidden out of sight on top of these recessed ceiling fittings. The heat generated by halogen lamps is sufficient to cause a fire. For this reason we highly recommend replacing this aging tech with modern LED lamps. Protection from serious harm When installed at your switchboard electrical safety switches automatically and immediately cut the electricity supply whenever an unsafe situation is detected. This will protect you from serious electric shock, injury or death and it will also help to prevent electrical fires in your home. Many house fires are started because of unsafe electrical appliances and other faults, many of which can be avoided. Only a licensed electrician can install these switches. According to NSW Government statistics approximately 1,800 house fires in NSW each year are caused by electrical faults and appliance faults. Our licensed electricians can help prevent such disasters by checking the electrical wiring in your house or business and installing the latest 100% compliant safety switches. Without electricity, most of the things we do and rely on on a daily basis wouldn’t be there. So while electricity is so ingrained into our lives that we can take it for granted and hardly notice it’s there, if there’s an electrical problem, it can often be difficult to notice anything else! No matter how simple or urgent any electrical repairs seem, it’s never okay to attempt to handle them on your own. Trying to take care of electrical problems without professional training is extremely dangerous. If you or someone else isn't hurt during your attempt, there’s still a chance that you’ve left something undone that poses a huge risk to you, your home, or your family. In fact, faulty electrical wiring and poorly maintained electrical appliances or apparatus are the number one cause of house fires in many locations. So in order to make sure that your home is safe, always rely on a professional for any electrical services. Mark Rawstorn Electrician Canberra, Queanbeyan and surrounds

Replacing your old incandescent or halogen lamps with energy efficient LED lighting is one of the most popular ways homeowners today are achieving savings on electricity consumption. An added benefit is that LED lamps have a much greater lifetime than conventional light bulbs and they do not generate as much heat. In every way they are better for the environment. LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode” and they do not have filaments. These days they are available in in many sizes, colours and brightness ratings. They are now also widely used in vehicle headlamps and indicator lights. They have a long life, and most are expected to last at least 5 years with normal use. It’s a bit early to say for sure just yet but it is likely that many will last for as much as 10 years or more. There are many colour options and some can even be colour controlled by an App on your phone, but soft white and soft yellow colours are the most popular for residential interior use. LED lights are incredibly energy efficient with examples of a 9 watt LED emitting as much light as a 60 watt incandescent filament bulb. With savings like this the cost of your electricity can certainly reduce over a period of time. For this reason they are the obvious choice for exterior sensor or security lighting too. I offer a wide range of LED lighting solutions which are quality backed by Australian suppliers. Please contact me to discuss the best options for your home or business.
